Mark your calendars for a unique opportunity to step into the serene world of Benedictine monks at St Augustine’s Abbey, Chilworth near Guildford. On Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 10am to 11:30 am, the Abbey will open its doors to the public for an exclusive talk on the Benedictine way of life.
Rooted in centuries old tradition, this enlightening event promises to unravel the mysteries behind the daily rituals and routines of Benedictine monks. Attendees will have the chance to explore the ancient wisdom encapsulated in St. Benedict’s Rule, written in 530 AD, and understand its enduring relevance in contemporary society.

The event will commence with an optional Holy Roman Catholic Mass at 9am in the Abbey Church, providing attendees with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and communion with the monks. The talk then runs from 10am to 11.30am in the Abbey Church. Refreshments will be freely avaiable along with access to the Benedictine monks’ shop which sells monk-made beeswax beauty creams and more. Admission to the talk is by donation, with a retiring collection set up to support the monks in their spiritual endeavors.

Participants will delve into the intricacies of Benedictine life, from the timeless practice of chanting in Latin to the discipline of rising at dawn for prayer, a tradition upheld for over 1,500 years. Curious minds will uncover the inner workings of this “prayer powerhouse,” as described by the BBC, and gain insights into the monks’ daily routine, which seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern technology.

Ever wondered what motivates individuals to embrace the monastic life? This event will provide answers, shedding light on the allure of a lifestyle characterised by simplicity, contemplation, and service. And attendees are encouraged to ask whatever they like of the two monks who are presenting.
